Choosing the right canvas size is the single biggest factor in whether your wall art looks intentional or accidental. Here's how to get it right.

The Two-Thirds Rule

As a general guideline, your canvas should fill about two-thirds to three-quarters of the available wall width. If you're hanging above furniture — a sofa, bed, or console table — the canvas should be about 60-75% of the furniture's width. A 24x36 inch canvas works well above a standard 84-inch sofa.

Common Size Guidelines

  • 16x20 inches: Ideal for small walls, narrow spaces, or gallery wall arrangements. Works above a nightstand or in a hallway.
  • 24x36 inches: The most versatile size. Works above a queen bed, a sofa, or as a standalone statement piece in a dining room.
  • 36x48 inches: Makes a real statement. Best for large living room walls, above a king bed, or in an entryway with enough clearance.
  • 12x12 inches: Perfect for grid arrangements or small accent spaces like bathroom walls or kitchen nooks.

Height Matters Too

The center of your canvas should sit at about 57-60 inches from the floor — eye level for most people. If hanging above furniture, leave 6-8 inches between the bottom of the canvas and the top of the furniture. Any more and the canvas feels disconnected; any less and it looks cramped.

Gallery Walls

For multi-piece arrangements, start with your largest canvas as the anchor piece and build outward. Keep 2-3 inches between frames for a tight grid, or 4-6 inches for a more relaxed layout. Mix sizes but keep a consistent frame style for cohesion.

When in doubt, go slightly larger than you think you need. Most people underestimate how much wall space a canvas actually fills once it's hung.
